Diane W suggested in an Open Thread at MLW that "... most evil is done in the name of self-righteous goodness."
And while I can understand how someone could come to that conclusion, I'm going to stick with Hannah on this one:
"The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil."
The Nazis were able to do what they did not because the vast majority of the "Good Germans" were filled with a self-righteous sense of goodness, a sense that what the Nazis were doing was somehow the RIGHT thing to do...
